The Oldies Media Aware Study (#omasunisa) explores the growing use of online technologies that specifically benefit the older generation. In this theme, the older generation being greater than 60 years old ie eligible for retirement. In particular, ways forward to support and encourage connections between our older generation via various online platforms for them to thrive.

My (personal) strength though is for the development of effective communication strategies that use technology platforms. An example; my work with the University of South Australia demonstrated that informal (or social) learning is as important to student engagement as that of formal learning. The outcome was a paper co-written titled “Enhancing Creative Thinking Abilities through the use of Social Media”. This is also more important as we enter this “social age” where the rapid evolution of new technology practices within a media communication community landscape is creating a challenge to traditional teaching methodologies and subsequent learning.

The combination of my professional communications background, with my research and study within the social media environment and research practice in a University environment (due to my degree), and my developing passion for understanding how our oldies are embracing social media or not, has lead to my current study called simply “Oldies Media Aware”.

The main purpose for social media sites is to connect with others, share stuff, to have conversations. If you remove the fact that it’s online, this is something all people enjoy doing and seek out ways to do. Every day. People have networked for centuries, through clubs and organisations, as well as informal networks of family and friends. Social media provides the opportunity to have, and be a friend, to congregate without leaving the house, to never be alone even when you are the only one in the house.

I have the ability to design, develop and implement systems and procedures ensuring efficient operations of business; including developing and introducing strategy, integration with other communications, content planning and generation, messaging, monitoring, analytics and reporting.

My #oma project , or “Oldies Media Aware” will look at the use of social media now, and into the future. I’m excited to be taking this journey. Click to read my first discussion post.
